Caring for Your Body as God’s Temple During Festive Celebrations

Christmas is a time of joy, celebration, family, music, and wonderful food. But for many people, the festive period also brings stress, exhaustion, overeating, and neglect of healthy habits. Christmas is a time of joy, celebration, family, music, and wonderful food. But for many people, the festive period also brings stress, exhaustion, overeating, and neglect of healthy habits.

As Christians, we are reminded that our bodies are not our own — they belong to God.

  1. Your Body Is God’s Temple

The Bible clearly teaches that our bodies are sacred.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…? Therefore honour God with your bodies.” — 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

This means the way we rest, eat, drink, and care for ourselves is an act of worship. During Christmas, when routines are disrupted, it becomes even more important to honour God by caring for the body He entrusted to us.

  1. Practice Moderation — Even in Celebration

Christmas meals are a blessing, but Scripture encourages balance.

“Let your moderation be known unto all men.” — Philippians 4:5

“It is not good to eat too much honey.” — Proverbs 25:27

Enjoy the food, but avoid excess. Self-control is part of the fruit of the Spirit and a sign of spiritual maturity.

  1. Prioritise Rest and Sabbath

Christmas can be busy, but God designed us with the need for rest.

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

“In vain you rise early and stay up late… for He gives sleep to those He loves.” — Psalm 127:2

Rest restores the mind, body, and spirit. Make space for sleep, quiet reflection, and unhurried time with God.

  1. Guard Your Mental and Emotional Health

The season can bring stress, comparison, family tension, or loneliness. God cares about your emotional well-being too.

“A cheerful heart is good medicine.” — Proverbs 17:22

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7

Take time to breathe, pray, journal, and disconnect when needed. Protect the peace God gives.

  1. Choose What Strengthens You

Not every activity, party, or food will help your health. This is where spiritual wisdom comes in.

“Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial.” — 1 Corinthians 10:23

Ask yourself:

Will this strengthen me or drain me?

Will it honour God or distract me from Him?

  1. Stay Physically Active

Movement is a gift. Even simple walks help the heart, mind, and mood.

 “Bodily exercise profits a little…” — 1 Timothy 4:8

It may not be the most important aspect of faith, but it still has value.

  1. Keep Christ at the Centre of Your Choices

Every act of self-care, discipline, rest, or healthy decision becomes meaningful when Christ is the focus.

“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31

Let your Christmas choices reflect Christ’s presence in you.

Caring for your body during Christmas is not about strict rules or pressure.

It is about honouring God, enjoying His blessings with wisdom, and protecting the vessel He has given you.

This Christmas, may you experience:

Peace in your mind

Strength in your body

Joy in your spirit

…and may everything you do bring glory to Jesus.
